 STITCHING SMALL TEARS

Stitching Small Tears

Stitching Small tears is a compilation of artists in the Vancouver underground electronic music scene of the late 1970s into the early 1980s. It was originally released as a limited edition cassette tape of 500 which sold out almost immediately. This double vinyl version was released in 2021 on Alien Replicant. It was remastered for vinyl from digital transfers of the original analogue tapes by Blair Petrie. It features a new bonus track by Blair Petrie written and recorded specifically for this release and available nowhere else. Artist Listing and Further Recording history is available on the back cover and at Stitching Small tears.

Shriek - Sexsells

12" EP on Rude Records (REP 1)

Originally recorded as a demo tape in 1979 and early 1980 for Quintessence Records.  They thought it sounded great as is and offered to distribute it if the band pressed it themselves. The music represents a transitory stage in the group from rather intense punk, with some rather tongue in cheek lyrics, to the beginnings of what would eventually become known as 1980s modern electro-rock and pop.

"
It starts out with the two most punk songs I have ever posted to this blog…things get more artsy with "1980", a one-chord art punk spazout that sounds like Wire channeling NYC no wave. Overall, this is a very recommended record.

Sexbeat  -  Groove Manoeuvres

12" Mini LP (SB 500)

Sexbeat were together from spring 1982 until spring 1983 and this recording represents the band's early days.  They ceased to be before a planned follow-up was recorded.

"
Mixing melodic rock driven by ringing guitar and kick-heavy drums the disc concludes with the memorable 'Neo-Cos 'mop' to which a haunting guitar and reflective vocal impart a quiet, moody strength.

Blair Petrie - NRBP

12" Mini LP on Obfuscate Perimeter Records (ObFu120001)

Blair Petrie's first solo record release.  Recorded in bits and pieces between Autumn 1982 and Spring 1983.  The music is a cross section of some of the styles he was involved with at the time of recording.  Released November 1983.

"
Petrie utilizes a variety of synths, electronic percussion, strings, guitars and voice to create a highly personal and emotional brand of new electronic music.

Blair Petrie - Noise

C-50 Cassette on Interference Tapes (Intape 1842)

Just a bunch of noise!  Try it, you'll hate it...                                               Released Spring 1984.

Charred Corn Salad with Creamy Lime Dressing

Noise was released as a cassette tape album with one side titled Pink Noise and one White Noise. These were roughly intended to convey material broadly encompassed by the parameters of the definitions of those sounds. The resultant sides of music were presented as suites.

So…

The first side, or suite, is entitled Pink Noise

a) Introduction and Overture (Including : Pleasant Noise)

b) Desubstantiate

c) Last Corridor

d) The Eastern Light on the West Dawn Corridor

e) See Through New Steel Eyes

The second side, or suite, is entitled White Noise

a) Gog Demands Love

B) Siuku i Kupa

c) Absorbed By Something Hideous

D) Kitchen Food [cut with a knife ‘til it bleeds]

e) That’s Not Music

f) Ugly Sounds

g) Untitled (one of, perhaps, hundreds)

h) Why Be a Man When You Can Be a Mannequin…

i) White and Pink

j) The Last Bliss

All pieces, except Last Corridor, were recorded onto an old quarter track stereo reel to reel in a 77 square foot apartment in January 1984. Last Corridor was recorded, and remained incomplete and only roughly mixed, on a rented one inch 8 channel reel to reel in an old warehouse during October 1981.

Due to the limited sound abilities of the recording equipment, and the ultimate medium of presentation being a cassette tape, much of the ‘noise’ aspect of the music was not achieved as desired.

"
His work with synthesizers and sounds for their own sake is lively, uncompromised and imbued with a sense of the dynamic and dramatic that is lacking in Vancouver's serious electronic composers.

...some pretty twisted pop tunes.  Kinda like Pere Ubu on quaaludes.

Blair Petrie - Requested Music

Cassette EP on Interference Tapes (Intape Cr6854)

A compilation of pieces composed by request.  For special Radio Broadcasts and unique compilation releases.  Released Spring 1985.

“The cassette tape (Requested Music) is actually extremely rare. I realized that I probably originally had, at most, 100 made. I did that tape during a break in Ultramarine when the band was down to Andy (Andrew Lissett - Guitar and Backing Vocals) and I and we were looking for new members.

I had also formed another project with Andy called Pig Doctor which was my idea of uniting Nitzer Ebb with Accept. We actually wrote about six songs and started recording them when Ultramarine restarted. If we had stayed with that project I would now be credited with starting the industrial music genre instead of Al Jorgensen. He didn’t cotton on to the idea until 1988. Oh well, story of my life. And, as David Bowie once wisely said “It’s not who does it first that matters, it’s who does it second.”

Stefan (Tischler) and I also wrote and recorded our project (Gorgons and Gargolyes) during this time, essentially, the summer of 1986.

Anyway, getting back to the tape; I’ve found about fifty but I also remembered that I used a bunch of them for working on various musical ideas over the next few years as a sort of scratch tape for bits of music. I guess (can’t remember) Alex (Douglas of The Contact List of Electronic Music) tried to distribute some but not many, if any at all. I would have sent out a few freebies. All this to say that, at most, there are about thirty out there. ”

Stefan Tischler and Blair Petrie - Gorgons & Gargoyles

Cassette Album

Written and Recorded Summer 1986 onto four tracks at Blair Petrie's rehearsal Space and on the streets, in the clubs and Bus depots of Vancouver.  Mixed at Gerald Toon's Northlake Studio by Gerald Toon, Blair Petrie and Stefan Tischler.  Original release Autumn 1986 as a cassette album by Blair Petrie and Stefan Tischler.  Eventually, there were two more cassette releases: one by Stefan Tischler and, later, one by Generations Unlimited.  Finally, it was released on compact disc.  The Expected One was used as an introduction to Ultramarine shows. It has appeared on a few compilations, notably the 12" vinyl release from Generations Unlimited.

"
A most powerful and awe-inspiring album that I really can't recommend strongly enough.   Mere words cannot do justice to this fine album.
